We are convinced that by sustaining traditional cultural practices we are able to produce a navel orange with old time flavor and taste. Bud lines, rootstocks and terrior all play a role in how oranges taste. Our Heirloom Navel Oranges are grown on “old line” Washington Navel trees, combined with the appropriate sour or sweet rootstock and soil profile. This combination along with our sustainable farming practices produces a truly memorable tasting piece of fruit. We haven’t come up with anything new in growing our Heirloom Navels, we are just farming them the way it was done 100 years ago. Sometimes new and improved is not as good as the original.

This wonderfully pink navel orange has a sweet taste with a spicy tang that will delight you from the first bite through the last. As you eat a Cara Cara don’t be surprised if you taste the richness of fresh berries. Most often people identify the flavor with those of raspberries and strawberries. The blush pink flesh is due to the presence of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to lowered risk levels of cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration. Although the Cara Cara is a relatively new variety (discovered in Venezuela in 1976) we farm the trees using traditional methods, which we know leaves a softer footprint.

Don’t be afraid of this special variety, they are a very versatile fruit. Bergamots are very juicy and acidic with few seeds; they can be used to add nuances to any recipe that calls for sour orange or lemon juice. The rind oil of Bergamots has a unique aroma and is beautifully perfumed, making it an important component of the tea and perfume industries. Italy grows the majority of the world’s commercial Bergamot supply, but we have had good success in California by planting them on warm sun soaked southern slopes.
